Bertoia, oh Bertoia...

The Bertoia Side Chair has been on my mind a lot lately; my friend and client has been enamored with this chair for a while, and as we have been planning for new chairs in her kitchen, naturally, we keep coming back to the Bertoia. I love the chair too for its modern classic appeal and chameleon-like ability to suit any environment where it is placed.

Bali Tattoo Artist : Made Della

Made Della is one of some artists who has been in Kuta, Bali for quite a long time. He started to wrestle with tattoo art since 1989. And from 1994, he began to be a tattoo artist in Kuta. According to him, at that time there were only few tattoo studios in Kuta, like Demon Tattoo, Baladewa, Mr. Dolphin, and Gungde.

After some time becoming a tattoo artist in some studios, in 2009 he decided to reopen his own studio named Black Angel. Recently, he has a plan to invite Bali tattoo artists establishing Bali Tattoo Artist Club again. Because for him, business is business, but solidarity and togetherness need to keep going. And here is a brief interview between Magic Ink and Made Bella.

What makes you holding out in tattoo art for so long?
We didn’t have any other job to do, hahahaha... And maybe tattoo was the only good thing for my life, hahaha…

When did you get your first tattoo?
Back in that 1989. Gungde made it. Besides, he fully supported me to be a tattoo artist. He always supports me.

Why did you decide to reopen your own studio?
If I used to work for other people, then I wanted to have my own. Moreover, I’m preparing a new generation, like Agus (Della’s son-red). So that Black Angel always exists.

You used to have a studio, why was it closed?
I did the business with my family, and there were some problems about financial quotient.

You are one of the people who have been holding on the tattoo industry in Kuta for quite a long time, how do you see its development?
Me and my friends used to compete more from our works, not from the rate. So please, for Bali tattoo artists, don’t compete in rate. We live from tattoo, so don’t bring each other down.

In tattoo, what style do you tend to?
Actually I can do all of them, but I like Chinese and Japanese style more.

And about BTAC (Bali Tattoo Artist Club), in your opinion, what’s the reason it does not go well?
I myself don’t understand too much about it, because it happened when I went to Germany. I was in Germany for 3 months, and when I got back it had already fallen apart. But I really think that BTAC should be established again. There are so many foreign artists opening studios in their rent houses and without any permit. Their visa is visa for holiday, not for working. If we’re not solid, we can be colonized. I mean, colonized in another version. If people with big capital come in and we’re not ready and solid, it’s possible that Indonesian artists are scraped and work to them. But again, for Bali tattoo artists, we don’t need to argue about rate. Also for the works, from the first I learned, up to now I still learn. Just keep learning, no need to get above oneself.

But it doesn’t mean that you’re scared to compete, right?
Oh no... I just want that artists stop arguing about rate.

And for the high rate of guide, what do you think as a tattoo artist? Do you feel harmed?
No, not really. We still depend on their service. Unless we have big capital, hehehe.. That’s why we need BTAC. It covers up these matters.

Ok, we wait for the BTAC! Last words?
For Bali tattoo artists, let’s remake the organization, don’t walk by ourselves. For Magic Ink, I always support this magazine. Who knows if the togetherness can help our business to grow, it will affect Magic Ink, too. Right? Hahaha... Let all tattoo artists hand in hand to make Magic
Ink better

A Siren Song

Last spring, I mentioned how although green was the accent color I'd used throughout many rooms in E's and my house, I had found myself craving blue. Living between two places, our house and apartment, I chose to move forward with incorporating blue into our interiors through the purchase of a blue velvet sofa for our apartment.

Maybe a story for another time, but bringing this specific piece into our lives was undoubtedly meant to be, and even after months of living with it, our sofa still makes me smile daily. The blue. The velvet. The tufting. The shape. I've been head over heels in L-O-V-E. I have grown more and more excited to settle into a new home where I've planned to make blue a prominent color in our main living space on account of this beauty.

Wrapped up in my new and exciting love, I've been ready to leave green behind without a second glance. And then I came upon this photo.

Homes & Gardens

Just when I thought I was over it, this room sings a siren song beckoning me back into the arms of green. I love everything about this space from the various shades of green to the beautiful framed botanical grouping.

Looking through my saved images, I next uncovered these photos that also speak the praises of green-- specifically, a lovely mint hue different than the accents threaded through our house, which may be exactly why these spaces turned my head.

I have no intention of being a fickle lover to our blue sofa or my plans for its future home, but these images are a gentle reminder-- there is room enough in my heart to still have affection for my old flame, green.

Bali Tattoo Studio: Dolphin Studio

This Tattoo Studio can be said as a unique one. It’s not easy to be found as it is located inside of Kuta Art Marketplace, but still full of customer everyday. That’s right, placed in Jl. Dewi Sartika which lately known as an oldest Tattoo Studio in Bali. This studio was built in 1975. There are three rooms, one is used as a tattoo execution, and another is used as a sitting room and a small rest room. Here they have two Tattoo Artists, Wayan Isu and Made Daplonk. This studio suits for about two-three clients. Whilst they wait, the waiting-list costumer or they who are just accompanying their friend could be well sit and enjoy a bunch of tattoo magazine and their sample of works. It is guarantee you won’t feel bored or maybe you will get ideas from it. Just in case you get bored, you may walk outside and go to Kuta Art Marketplace to shop or just look around there, to kill times. This studio is facilitated with television, air conditioner, and Medical Sterilizers. About the ink, they use Starbright and Kuro Sumi ink. In a week, this studio handles more than 20 costumers.

STATION JULIET

So, week one of formation manoeuvering is over. One more week of developmental runs, then we go in for assessed.

For those not in the know, formation manoeuvering is... well, it's fairly straightforward, really. Ships manoeuver in formation. There is a guide ship (creatively named The Guide) and other ships form up around it--then move around to different positions. During manoeuvres, it looks a bit like this:

We're using the PCT (Orca) model in the simulators, which is a little weird since last time I was in the sims we were using Frigates. That said, we'll sail on Orcas for six weeks, so it's just as well that we're using them to practice.

Manoeuvres are fun. Well, I think so, anyway, but that's probably just because I got the hang of it really quickly and I'm good at it. It probably also helps that the Mentors (retired Captains and above who act as Captains of the simulated ships, and provide feedback on whatever we happen to do in the NABS) are a lot more mellow on MARS IV than they were on MARS III. This time around, they coach you and provide pointers, rather than make you feel like a complete retard. Or maybe it's just because I'm doing pretty well and quickly heading to the level needed for assessments.

This week, and for a few more training days, we get to have six minutes between each "EXECUTE", but for the last days and the assessment phase, we only get five minutes. Luckily, my Friday run got to that standard, and the run before that was pretty much there, too.

I'm not going to count chickens before they hatch, or however that goes, but I think I'm on track to fly through manoeuvres assessments, and move on to DC school--which I'm sortof dreading, especially if we still use CHEMOX--and, finally, sea phase.

I thought I'd be updating my blog a lot more, now that I don't really have to study or, really, do anything at night, but it seems boring to tell people about sitting around a simulator bridge all day.

In other news, I've put in my posting preferences. The top three students are "guaranteed" their preferred posting, or so I'm told, but after that it's up in the air. I asked for the West Coast all the way, Destroyer, Frigate, Tanker. I'd rather avoid the Tanker because, well, it's a big, fat, lumbering target. And it doesn't really have any weapons. And it's ugly. The list goes on and on, but being on the West Coast is more important than not being on a Tanker, so I'll go for it if I have to.

I'd much rather get the Destroyer, though. In no small part because it just sounds cool. I'm also told it'll be sailing a lot in the near future, which means sea time, which in turn means, hopefully, getting my ticket earlier. Even if it doesn't, I feel like it's a bit like YAG time--it's just extra street cred.

Also, BZ to the Danish Navy for their anti-pirate actions this week, (they might be trying to steal our islands, but we're on the same side) and to the FBI for arresting BG McSoulpatch.

Finally, pearl of wisdom of the week, courtesy of Lt(N) Dallin:
Never trust a Lieutenant with a CD, or a Lieutenant-Commander without one.
(Note: a CD is the Canadian Forces Decoration, "awarded to officers, and to the men and women of the Canadian Forces who have completed twelve years of service" with "a good record of conduct during the final eight years of claimed service." Your humble servant will be eligible for one in 2017, hopefully after I get to two-and-a-half.)

Well, that's about all I have to say for tonight... Keep your stick on the ice!
