Copacabana Beach

Copacabana Beach is a very attractive beach crescent with a wide expanse of sand from the road to the ocean, located in the southern zone of the city Rio de Janeiro - Brazil, beach which is one of the most famous in the world, the city and beach pair up to offer a spectacular destination for both tourists and locals. Full of style and packed with gorgeous people.

The Copacabana neighbourhood which was just a small fishing village till the 1900’s flourished rapidly after the inauguration of the Copacabana Palace Hotel. In fact, the area is divided into two beaches, Leme beach and the actual Copacabana beach.

The area is constantly brimming with tourists as they hang around the attractive beach, kiosks, bars and restaurants. What actually made this area famous is the Copacabana fort and the Palace hotel.

In fact the hotel has now been declared as part of Brazil’s natural history. The Fort which dates back to 1914 today houses the Army Historical Museum. Ammunitions dating to the early 20th century are displayed here.

In Copacabana Beach you will meet a blend of people, different languages, different social backgrounds, sellers, entertainers, businessmen and beggars. The Cabana is also filled with sellers of all types and ages. They make their living offering bracelets, shirts, towels, drinks, and so on to the turists of Rio de Janeiro. You will find several nice gifts to bring home, and be happy that you helped some of the poor people of Rio.

Walking along, from Leme towards the Copacabana fort, you will pass several restaurants and small beach bars. You can also see beautiful sand sculptures along the beach by artists trying to make a daim. And entertainers with incredible ball control.

The creativity to make money is astonishing. You see kids making tricks at the traffic lights, the ordinary freeze character, magic tricks, markets, fried corn vendor, tatooist, and the list goes on.

You have volley ball, beach volley, foot volley, football, frescoball, jogging, surfing, boogie boarding and so on. The numbers of sports exercised on Copacabana Beach is immense. On Sundays and holidays half of the beach avenue Av. Atlântica is closed for traffic; Then you have people on bicycles, skateboards, rollerblades, joggers all taking advantage of that beautiful beach walk.

The night is one of the best times to appreciate Copacabana Beach. To sit at a quiosque with a Caipirinha in the evening is definitely something you should try. A good advise is to pick a table a little bit back from the stream of people passing by; By doing that you will avoid that almost endless stream of beggars, vendors and weirdos.

All in all, just being on Copacabana is an incredible feeling, looking at everything going on, the smells and sounds. At least now you know what to expect on Copacabana beach.
